Bummer about my illusions

Facebook is starting to really grate on my nerves. I've got friends liking stuff that make me not want to like them anymore. I guess hypocrisy is so pervasive in our culture that it's no big deal to them. I find it difficult to reconcile that they like me and like things that are totally anathema to me and which actively work against me and my goals. Maybe they don't really like me at all. *headdesk*

In my opinion friends in facebook are more like acquaintances. People will friend anyone they even remotely know (to compete in the who has the most friends competition).

I don't approve every single friend request I get. Most of the people in my list are people I actually know, and I have spent time in meatspace with them. Everyone has their guilty pleasures, such as the ghastly games and quizzes. I don't begrudge anyone mindless fun. I'll hide FarmVille and MafiaWars and all that crap from my newsfeed, but have fun with it.

My issue correlates to if I was gay and someone I thought was my friend "liked" Westboro Baptist Church. What would that tell me about that person? That I was unaware he/she was a homophobic douchenozzle behind my back, that's what.

Your friend may also be clueless about what Westboro Baptist Church is - best case scenario. Unlikely, though.

Best case scenario might actually be that they "liked" something because that is the only way to gain the ability to write on the group wall to tell them what dickweeds they are. Some people apparently do this, as I have seen those sort of posts.

Personally, I'm not going to hit the "like" button for that purpose, but I have wished I could respond to the stupidity in some of the groups my friends have joined. And yes, I have friends who are jackasses about some things, but are otherwise reasonable enough.
