the overpopulation rant )

In other news, I took [livejournal.com profile] ratkrycek to lunch yesterday. I never spent much time in the 9th Ward before Katrina. I certainly didn't go over there afterwards since there was so much going on and I didn't want to get in anyone's way. Slowly, the community comes back to life. There are fast food places open. Many houses are already gutted, but it's likely they're still fighting with insurance companies or to get some federal assistance in order to rebuild. Common Ground is doing a wonderful job over there.

I'm going over to [livejournal.com profile] lab_rattus' mother's apartment tomorrow to hang out with her while her mother plays bridge. I'll be dragging some computer stuff with me so I can help her find and correct the problem with her mom's computer. Maybe that will ease her frustration level if she gets something accomplished even by proxy.

Going up to Shreveport for PPD and Ken's memorial. It's hard to believe Ken is dead. He was only in his late 50s. Not old at all by today's standards. Apparently he was one of two people who died at this year's Dragonfest in Colorado. At least he was doing what he loved at the end: bringing cool jewelry to the Pagan communities.

So much to get done. I'm going to have to give David either this or tomorrow evening to deliver the printer. If neither is convenient, it will have to be next week.

I tried to call [livejournal.com profile] lab_rattus back last evening and the evening before (she never seems to remember that I've got my writers' group on Monday nights). I hope her interview went OK. She seemed to be freaking out somewhat over it.

Ye flipping gods, I'm tired already and haven't even driven the diagonal of the state yet. It will be nice to see Brad again. He's letting us stay at his place.

So far, today has been productive. Pete and I got a printer working to give to David. That will let him continue to use the computer to write and edit his work and to bring copies to the writers' group. I also found a laser printer for Pete on Craigslist. He's going to snag it this afternoon.

Pete and I swapped out motherboards in my system today. Now I'm running a 1.7Ghz CPU with 512Mb of RAM. The problems I had been having with my sound are gone. I didn't even have to reinstall Linux. The chipsets of the old motherboard and the new one are the same. We did have to disable the onboard ethernet to use the NIC since the drivers didn't recognize the onboard one. Even after all the derangement of pulling the old motherboard out, installing the new one and having it not work, reverting to the old one and having it not work and reinstalling the new one, I'm fairly happy.

It took all morning to run errands. Five stops and four hours later brings us home to begin the build. CompUSA was hard to get out of. Two computer geeks are like kids in a candy shop at a place like that. Also, we stopped at Borders and bought some books. We had to have lunch...sushi, mmmm. The bank took a while because they had only one teller on the drive through lanes. We also had to wait a while for Pete's brother-in-law to stop by the mall parking lot with Pete's boxes of media. All that accomplished, we came back and are up to our armpits in an ATX case.

I was being nice and invited Nancy and Terry out for breakfast before they left. By the time they got to Shoney's, it was lunchtime. We ate and chatted. Terry and I suggested that Nancy get therapy. I finally found out what Starhawk had told her when she asked what she should do. Starhawk used the same Persephone parable as she did at the full moon circle the other night. One trick pony much? I would have thought that surely someone as Wiccan as Starhawk could have come up with something a little more...pertinent? Nancy played apologist saying that she probably didn't want to give real advice since she didn't want to be sued. What a load of shit. If she didn't want to give advice, she should have said so. And when was the last time an author was sued for impromptu advice given? Infuriating.

Please go here and see what some filthy swine did to some animals. If you could scrounge up some computer parts and such like or plan a geeking session to build a Frankensystem for this beleagered animal shelter during the impending UFie meet, I would personally be grateful. I would also be able to send some smaller parts your way if necessary and the shipping doesn't cost too much. Everyone who contributes would have a place to stay with me and food to eat if you ever come to visit New Orleans and that offer would stand in perpetuity or until I die, whichever comes first. Really, the animals in that particular rescue could really use some help to watch over them and either keep them safe or get their tormenter(s) prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Thanks for any help you can provide to keep any additional animals from being killed.
