WHY IT MATTERS
Nov. 25th, 2012 09:02 amPeople with poor spelling and grammar on the internet often say that it doesn't matter. They figure that if you can understand what they've typed in context, their effort is sufficient. Though that may be true for inconsequential chatter, it most certainly is not when someone is attempting to make a serious point.
The internet is still largely a visual medium. People type millions of words every day on their keyboards to communicate thoughts both monumental and frivolous. There is a big difference between posting a photo of a kitten with a woeful expression captioned, "I iz the sad," and typing, "Some bad whether dosent proove climeat change is real." The former is mildly amusing, and the latter sounds stupid regardless of the validity of the assertion.
Unless you have a learning disability, such as dyslexia, using poor language skills makes you look lazy, as though you couldn't be bothered to learn your native tongue properly. And if you are so lazy in that respect, why should we expect you to do any better with facts and logic?
Indeed, using your best English shows respect for your readers, the subject being discussed, and yourself as a competent adult. Using poor communications shows sloppy thinking, ignorance, disrespect for those reading, and your own ability. That is why it matters.

Date: 2012-11-25 05:59 pm (UTC)They're mad because they didn't put in the effort necessary to appear intelligent to others? Your peers are 4th graders.
I read a comment from a man about a Yahoo article discussing the cost of interment services and the man typed that he wanted to be put in a cider box and raped with a simple cloth. Excuse me for chuckling at your expense dude, but damn.
