With the news being eclipsed by the media circus in California, we must remember that there are more pressing stories that have more far-reaching implications than one middle-aged freak. (You may have to use bugmenot to read it.) Why was our government so eager to intervene in the plight of a woman in a persistant vegetative state who was of no use to anyone and could never be again when there is a living, struggling woman in Pakistan who deserves equal if not more fervent support?

While the Bush Administration moans about terrorism, it does little to decrease the rationale for it globally. The woman referenced in the above story needs to be made into a cause celebre. The more prominent she becomes as a good example of progressive Islam, the less likely the Pakistani government can get away with making her "disappear". What kind of horrible fucked up is it to be "sentenced" to gang rape for something your brother did and then be expected to commit suicide? She effectively make a silk purse out of a sow's ear by getting the rapists convicted, imprisoned and compensating her monetarily. Then she put the cherry on top by starting her schools. What the Pakistani government did was slap her in the face by releasing her rapists and imprisoning her.

Let's start an email campaign to save her from what appears to be impending doom. Write the info@embassyofpakistan.org Pakistani Embassy and Amnesty International. Post these links in your own journal. If we are to expend energy toward saving anyone, it should be someone worthy of saving and not some white chick who looks good in photographs but who does nothing of any great importance in her shallow life.

Since I have...

a connection into our foreign ministry, I have sent him your link, and asked some questions. Sadly, this is not such an unusual story... I am more or less convinced that they are on the case already. This desk there does a lot of work for that region. Thanks for info, of course!

Update: The case is known, details are being collected, intervention planned.

Do these people also have nukes? *shudder*
From: [identity profile] nolawitch.livejournal.com
Yes, they do! Of course, being close to another nuclear power, India, Pakistan prefers to lob its missiles at India so we don't much care. If Pakistan decided to take out Bangalore, we'd lose the cheap labor in the outsourced call centers over there and companies would have to scramble to replace them.

about your current music

is that a cover of King's X's "Spoon Man"?

(now I have to go hunt up my King's X CDs...)

Not that I know of. The info on the net says it was written by Soundgarden. I've misspelled it, though, and will correct it to one word as it should be.

Did you get my email question?

yes and I replied to it. I had to do some research, you know...

And I'm hearing both songs in my head now. and they're not the same. Hmmm. (well, you can't copyright a song title)

Thanks for the emailed info.

Two songs earworming their way through your head simultaneously? You need some alcohol.

I like the suggestion in the last paragraph:

Shrub should officially invite her to the White House. Not that there is a chance in Hades he would do it.

Of course, by now she has probably been "assisted" in performing her long overdue suicide. :-/

This is exactly the sort of Horatio Alger story that the elitist bastards in power need to parade around if they want the people to continue to believe their lies of populism. This one woman is making a difference despite the obstacles of her culture. Then again, Bush & Co. don't want to see any real progress because then they'd have to stop whining about terrorism and do something to combat it from a hearts and minds standpoint instead of the lucrative military action.

It certainly seems as if

they don't want progress if it means even slightly embarrassing an "ally" like Pakistan or Saudi Arabia. "Bold leadership" my ass.

I think your ass IS more capable of "bold leadership" than Bush & Co. For that matter, the hairball [livejournal.com profile] voxwoman brushed off her cat is more capable than they are.

Hatred gets in the way of facts once again

Intervention by the State Department resulted Wednesday in a commitment from Islamabad to allow Mukhtaran to travel to the U.S., where rights groups have invited her to talk about violence against women in Pakistan.

No need to apologize, I know you won't.

I'm glad you realize your hatred gets in the way of your facts. As of the date and time I posted the above, nowhere was it reported that the US government was doing anything.

By the way, what the hell have you done about it? Did you bother to email anybody? Did you post it on the UF board? In your LiveJournal?

Of course there's no need fcor me to apologize; I'm not the one with the cranial-rectal inversion.

All it took me was a simple phone call

I just had to wait for the press release.

Thanks for proving once again that you are the most bigoted person I know.

I know you are, but what am I?

Coming from someone who smooches the sphincters of Coulter, Limburger and their ilk and supports the government that is bought and paid for by the fundimentalist Christians, you are simply projecting your own bigotry upon others. From dictionary.com:

bigot
n : a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own

I'm not the one who has to screen every damned comment in my LJ.
