PenguinPete's cat, Spot, was killed last night by neighborhood dogs. I explained that was one of the possibilities when Spot decided to be an indoor-outdoor cat. He could have also gotten run over by a car or ingested poison. Pete could not keep him indoors because Spot was a willful, little son of a bitch. When they moved to a nice neighborhood in Gentilly, Pete thought it would be OK to let him out as he wished since it was better than where they had lived Uptown. Turns out it wasn't really.

Spot: he lived fat, died fairly young and left a bloody corpse for my friend to bury.

Only if nin_wife predeceases you. I don't think she's want to hear some of the funny sort of stuff I'd write while she was grieving from your recent, fatal mishap with a brand-new power tool.

Yeah. I sorta wonder if he would have been able to climb something to get away, he wouldn't have been killed. Pete's ex-girlfriend got him declawed against my advice. He wasn't too much of an ill-tempered cat before he got declawed, but afterwards, he'd bite gratuitously.

You know, it always makes me wonder about pet owners who seem surprised when their pets turn into vicious little bastards when they spay, neuter, declaw, deteeth, devenom or remove any other of those so important parts. Of course the animal is going to turn to evil, wouldn't you if someone took away parts of you that you desperatly want? I know I sure as hell would.

I'm all for spaying/neutering (I'd extend that to a sizeable portion of the human race as well), but as for depriving an animal of its defense mechanisms? No way. All my cats have been spayed/neutered and the worst thing I can say about that process is that they got a little fat and way lazier. Considering the overpopulation problems, both in the domestic pet realm and the human realm, sterilization is the optimal way to prevent fuckloads of unwanted puppies/kittens/human larvae from cluttering up the planet. No animals suffer unduly from the lack of procreation abilities.

I understand the reasoning behind spaying / neutering, and I'm all for it when it comes to outdoors animals, when it comes to indoors animals I'm all for what ever choice the owner makes. A cat I know turned into the most evil creature on this planet when he was neutered, he makes Greebo seem like Mr Cuddly Kitten. While on the other hand one of the rabbits we had just didn't like us for a week or two and then went back to humping anything with a heartbeat, and some things without.

As for humans... you're right about them.

That's just criminal. One, it's mutilation. Two, one never, ever, ever declaws a cat that has a tendency to go outside. And did I mention the mutilation factor? Grrrr.

I know! I told them that! They didn't listen. She was all about not having the cat claw up the furniture. Big fucking deal. The furniture they had wasn't expensive stuff from pricey stores; it was cheap second-hand pieces from thrift stores. I can't tell you how hard I tried to change their minds.

I just never understand the folk that can make that decision. It's a rare cat that doesn't outgrow (or can't be trained out of) the whole furniture scratching habit. It's like saying, "Johnny, you keep wearing your shoes out, we're going to amputate your feet. That'll stop that nasty walking habit you've got."

Even so, unless the couch or whatever costs thousands of dollars, what's the big deal? If you've got some $50 couch from the Salvation Army, you've got no reason to put on airs like your crap furniture is so hoity-toity.

Poor Spot. I've always had indoor/outdoor cats...they're just happier being able to go out and hiss at the moon or whatever it is they do on their rambles. Most of the time they just like being with me when I'm out in the Big Blue Room.

Pass on a hug to PenguinPete.

You live in the boonies, though. City life is more fraught with perils. You obviously have a fairly sizeable yard since so much of it is devoted to growing the plethora of plants you mention. (BTW, OT. I saw the cutest rototiller on a TV commercial last night and thought of you. It weighs about 20 pounds and looks to fit into small spaces that conventional rototillers can't get to. Did you ever find your blades?)

I'll give Pete a hug on your behalf when I see him for lunch Friday. He is taking pity upon my poor keister and is treating me to sushi at our favorite buffet. He asked what he should do with Spot's remaining food, litter and litterbox. I told him to donate them to the SPCA.

True, they're in the boonies now, but they started out as city cats. One of them loooved walking along the top of the fence that separated our yard from the pit bull's next door. She and Baby were friends, but it always gave me a heart attack. I've always made them come in at night (well, sometimes lately it's been 2am), since that's the most dangerous for them.

OT: Nope, the tiller blades are still MIA. I'm looking for a way to get replacement blades. The tiller is mom's Mantis and I'd rather not replace it, but that'll be the next step.

That would make a great epitaph. Too bad I can't give proper attribution unless you return and identify yourself.

Whoops.

He sure liked anchovies when we ordered them on pizza. He was a fairly reasonable cat before they had him declawed.

So Sad.

I will call him on Monday. I hope he is OK. Pete's a good guy.
