Question for long-time LJ users:
Aug. 8th, 2005 03:53 pmIf you friend someone, shouldn't their entries show up on your friends page unless they are friends-locked and they haven't friended you...yet?
I'm still tinting windows. I ran out of tint so I have to go back to Home Depot to get some more. The good news is that the most difficult ones are done. The other good news is that I can take the cost of the tint on my taxes next year (whoop-de-fucking-do). I hope the amount of money it saves me in electric bills is worth the investment. I'll also add the amount for the screening as that was also energy-rated. Tinting is a pain in the ass, people. It looks awesome after it's done, but getting it all aligned, trimmed and squeegeed is a stone-cold drag. That said, I think it's well worth the aggravation for those of us in hotter climes as it really has cooled the house down noticeably.
I was so lazy over the weekend. My muscles were killing me from the rearranging we did last Friday. I've been eating aspirins to alleviate the pain. As soon as I get the place exactly the way I want if for at least fifteen minutes, I can die happy. In the meantime, there is a lot left to do. I might as well get as much done as I can while I'm not working because there's never enough time to do big projects when I am.

Date: 2005-08-09 12:50 am (UTC)BUT, if you click the little "backdate entry" box at the bottom, then it won't show up on friends lists (I think). At least, it won't show up on RSS feeds.
The reason they do this is to really screw with our heads. Other than that, I don't know.

Date: 2005-08-08 10:00 pm (UTC)There are some potential concerns, especially if (as I suspect) sunshine beats down on these windows in a fierce fashion.
If your windows are double pane, they can be sealed either with butyl or silicone. (The goo that seals the actual glass unit, not the weatherstripping around the frame/glass.)
If they are sealed with butyl, tinting the inside with a reflective coating could cause heat buildup in between the panes, resulting in seal failure.
While there are similar heat issues with silicone, it is less susceptible to extreme temps, and is less likely to fail.
The older your windows are, the better the chance they will be sealed with butyl. Also, the better the chance that the butyl will fail, as it gets stiffer as it gets older.
If the windows fail, you will notice condensation forming in between the glass panes.
If you know who manufactured the windows, it would be worth your while to find out what their policy/warrantee is regarding reflective film.
On the other hand, if you are applying the film to the outside of the windows,..um..never mind. :) This would all be moo.
Yes, moo. You know, like a cow's opinion? It doesn't mean anything. It's "moo". :P

Date: 2005-08-08 11:14 pm (UTC)For all the trouble I've had applying the stuff to the inside of the windows, I can only imagine how much worse it would be trying to apply it to the outside, especially to the second floor windows. I think I'd rather babysit Damien than try to do that with only the condo association's ladder and force of will.

Date: 2005-08-08 11:36 pm (UTC)Single pane means no worries. They're virtually immune to thermal shock.

Date: 2005-08-09 04:09 am (UTC)One wonders if perhaps you might not be better off just buying some reflective storm windows? I have no idea how adhesive the films are, but I'd hate to see classic lead glass windows ruined. Are they beveled edges?
Of course, historic homes often have their own set of rules about what you can and can not do. You may need to check with your local historic society, at least if your home is on the register.
Often you can buy glass storm windows in either vinyl, wood or metal frames, which use a single glass, which could be a reflective or tinted glass. There's one called "solar bronze reflective", although as I recall, the reflective surface was susceptible to damage, so maybe not for storm windows. Alternately, you could just glaze your own storm window glass in permanently, except this makes opening them problematic.
If your house is not on the historic register, or otherwise 'protected' and you just want more efficient windows, you could likely sell the lead glass windows for enough to put high efficiency vinyl windows in their place.
Good luck with it, in any case. :)

Date: 2005-08-09 12:44 am (UTC)Alternatively, I could mark today's post as "backdated" and then post the new one with yesterday's date. Then yesterday's post will show up on Friends pages, but not the one from today.
See?
Another reason for friends entries not showing up ...
Date: 2005-08-09 01:06 am (UTC)I regularly get the access-denied message from our firewall when looking at a certain persons LJ, and her entries dont show up on my Friends page when Im looking at it from work. Our firewall blocks four letter words and other sites of dubious nature. (Since we sign a usage agreement I really have no objection to this - one is not supposed to view pr0nography at work, after all :P)
