Now that my hangover has somewhat abated,
Oct. 15th, 2005 12:16 pmI can really enjoy how cool last night at The Bar was. Velvet called and said that her son was having his grand reopening after doing all the repairs and renovations that the hurricane precipitated. The Bar is in Fat City which did get some water. Fortunately, they didn't get so much water as wind damage. The moose head on the ceiling was unaffected. (Corpsman asked, "Where's the rest of the moose?" Ha ha ha. The Bar used to be the Ski Lodge so they HAD to have a moose head.) The renovations really improved the place. My only complaint is that the parking lot is too small for the number of people the place can pack in. We had to park across the street and shuffle through a grayish layer of crud left after the water receded.
After a few hours of drinking and shooting the breeze with my witch friends, I heard a voice in my ear asking if I was Susan. I turned to see an old coworker I had just been referring to in a conversation with Corpsman not two months ago. He was there with his girlfriend and said he was wondering where I was a few months ago too. His company apparently needs a technical writer and I was the first person he thought of. We had a swell couple of hours after that drinking, talking and exchanging phone numbers and email addresses. His company will be coming back to town in November from their exile in Hattiesburg and I may be able to get the tech writing position. It's not what you know; it's who you know.
Edit: In other news, I installed Flash on my Mandrake systems yesterday. Corpsman wanted to play games on Braingle and I wanted to torture myself with the Badger thing one more time. There are tons of cool Flash animations floating around out there. I would wager there are as many cool ones as there are lame ones. When testing the install, I found a Flash animation set to Tom Lehrer's "The Elements". Pete, who stayed the night here in order to do more cleaning of his Gentilly apartment, had never heard the song before.
Also, before we left for The Bar,
lab_rattus called from Pensacola to shoot the breeze and see how things were going.

Also, before we left for The Bar,
Hey - sounds great!
Date: 2005-10-15 05:33 pm (UTC)Only why somebody wanted a "Ski Lodge" in New Orleans is quite a mystery to me... On the other hand: We do have a Pattaya bar here, even if there are indeed thai girls dancing in it :-).

Date: 2005-10-15 06:12 pm (UTC)Once a year, they truck sand into our main trainstation to have a beach-volleyball tournament, by the way. Crazy enough, sure. But I am quite convinced there is no bar big enough for a court like that in all switzerland!
Actually, and to be honest, I just hate the ski lodge concept, wherever it may be - so don't mind me. Childhood trauma ;-)!

Date: 2005-10-15 06:19 pm (UTC)The volleyball court concept is way cool. When I was on a corporate team when I lived in Phoenix, there was a really great bar called the Monastery (because it used to be one) that had sand courts. The team used to go there quite a bit to practice...yeah, that's the ticket. We'd practice...and we'd get thirsty so we had to drink frosty mugs of beer...and the beer made us have to pee so we'd go to the restrooms which were decorated with pictures of naked members of the opposite sex. Great for heterosexuals; not so good for homosexuals.
Awesome!
Date: 2005-10-15 07:00 pm (UTC)And the restrooms - I quite see the problem ;-). Still. Sounds like a lot of fun! Which skiing is NOT, as you have found out so painfully... I was a good skier, of course. Until I found out that the faster I got down, the bigger a percentage of time I had to spend immobilized on the bloody lift. Sometimes I think I am *still* suffering from these years of being freezing cold day after day, and that is the reason why I always wear 2 layers of clothes more than other people ;-).
