My coffeemaker quit working. Now, instead of staying in all day and resting, I have to go out to the store to replace the unit. A geek cannot live without coffee.

My goofy neighbor is coughing, crying and drinking beer on the sidewalk outside because she locked herself out of her condo for the umpteenth time. She's old and getting fairly dotty.

This evening, Corpsman and I are going to a MoveOn.org candlelight vigil for the 2,000 fallen military personnel in Iraq. We get to meet other MoveOn members in the area and network. If this country doesn't get its shit together and kick the neo-con trash to the curb in the midterm elections, I have no sympathy for the morons who vote for the neo-cons and then get burned by their pernicious policies.

Aaaaaaauuuuuugh

Don't You start using that stupid "teh" garbage!

You didn't get that quite right. Geeks can do quite well without coffee. I am a tea drinker myself. It is caffeine we can't do without. ;-)

Sorry. That irritates me too if I see it too much. I'll fix it.

I don't have any decent tea and no cola in the house. I have no choice but to venture out.

Ditto on the coffee idea.

I drink tea in the morning not coffee. I've never liked coffee....

What's a neocon?

I'm having my own morning anxiety too. I've got coffee but Nick missed a flight. Did catch this last one though... and I don't know if I didn't get paid because of power outtages or what. :P I'm hoping when mail comes it says I got paid then I just have to get them to electronically check why it didn't go in.

DeserteRat666 and all the idiots who profess to be conservatives but love George W. Bush no matter what he does are neo-cons. They're basically radical right wingers in conservative clothing. They're the twerps who are trying to institute a theocracy in this country and spend it into bankruptcy with their pet war in Iraq.

Poor you...

That sucks. I HATE going (back) to the store unexpectedly, even if it only means two flights of stairs and about 10 meters of crossing the street ;-)!

And tell miss goofy to either wear the bloody key around her neck or give you a spare - and if she doesn't want to, she will just have to move out :-P.

That sounds quite cool, that vigil... Do you think there will be any neocons present? Better not get into any discussions there, but: Yeah, it must be totally painful to mourn with trash-voting parents, I guess... Still. The pain of every single family member is real, nonetheless, I'm sure...

No neo-cons would show up for this unless they're on a MoveOn.org email list to infiltrate the enemy. Honestly, Corpsman has mourned every Marine and every Navy person who has perished. He's hit especially hard when another corpsman is reported dead. He wasn't too fond of the Navy, even though he made it his career, but he loves his former units. I can understand that kind of loyalty after a decade of retirement. That's why he's now a hardcore liberal like me. He hates that his buddies and their decendants have perished for the lies and idiocies of the Bush administration.

Miss Goofy is totally insane. I told her she should leave a key hidden somewhere the last several times she got locked out.

Yeah - I can understand it too, his loyalty and his horror...

My friend's sister has lost her husband in the first gulf war and a son in the first days of the Iraq disaster. She is one bewildered lady since, still a republican, but completely off her balance. Wonder if she'll see the big picture some day...

As a completely non-military person, I have a hunch that most soldiers of all times actually perished for lies, egos and idiocies of kings, governments and tyrants, by the way. The first peace movement here had that slogan: "What if they staged a war - and nobody went...?" Of course it helps to take care to "breed" impoverished masses whose only chance for an education is the army... But I still grieve for the persons tricked and fooled. And their families. not only of those who died, but also for those who came back traumatized and dangerous... It's all a nightmare.

It's a sticky wicket when talking to soldiers. It's not cool to tell them that the war they gave up everything for was really waged to satisfy some despot's (oops, I mean President's) ego and fill his bank account. So all I say when I see a vet is "thank you." And I mean that.

As for Bush, I have nothing printable to say about it.

I can imagine that... To be honest, as a swiss person, I have never met any soldier in person - not one who has seen combat, that is. Our own army is a joke, and an expensive one...
I *have* met two guys who were in the foreign legion. One was an alcoholic, on a definite road to self-destruction. Aggressive and scary. The other described rather accurately how life will always feel different when you have killed. And that he feels sad he has taken that path, but would not be the person he is now if he hadn't. He is now breeding dogs, and will probably never trust a human again... Beautiful, gentle and fascinating man. But very sad story.
I am not sure what I would say to one of your vets... Would definitely depend on the person. And the circumstances. But I do feel sad for every destroyed life and family.

get a French press. The coffee is much better, and all you need is a tea kettle and stove to make it work. Plus no filters to buy ever again! You can also use a tea ball in a pot if you're desperate in the meantime, or even loose in the pot for a couple minutes and sieve it out.

French press? You mean pick up a copy of Le Monde? *snerk*

I'll get whatever the store has available. Shelves at most retail outlets here are decidedly sparse.

Actually, I have some instant coffee from MREs that a friend dumped on me. I've been heretofore hesitant to dig into that stash.

Tee hee!

Nurtz, I forgot about that. Ah well, the sieve will work just as well, as long as it's a fine one. Instant coffee, though? Pfaugh!

Thanks. I got a new coffeemaker. It's got a timer on it that will allow me to drag my sleepy ass to the kitchen and have coffee in the morning. Woo hoo!

I hope your flights are uneventful. All those airports you have to go through can be a drag. Keep your mind focused on the prize at the end of the trip. :)

Aren't those the guys advocating pulling out of Iraq immediately, if not sooner?

They have no ethics or morals if that's them.

Not to my knowledge. Sure, they want the troops to come home, but I get a sense that they want some benchmarks for success and a target date rather than just rounding them up and hauling them out.

Re: More info at

The benchmarks, okay. But it has to be event driven and no target date is possible. It doesn't take long to figure that out either. If you are going to do a target date then you might as well pull out immediately. As per the other discussion, that would be morally and ethically heinous. The US would be morally and ethically responsible for every death after the exit date. What they are asking is impossible and I suspect that they know it.

To do the job right, it's going to take at least ten years. Yes, we should never have gone in there in the first place but the eggs are scrambled.

You mean a party celebrating death, right?

At least, that's how the hate jocks spin these memorial vigils. Pretty effing disgusting.

I can't wait till we get those assholes brought up on obscenity charges and kicked off the air.

I can't wait because it will never happen, even though it should. Well, as long as we are going to make "obscenity" a legal exception to freedom of speech, that is.

Which we shouldn't do, so we should stop. But we won't.

Fuck. Now I need some coffee.

sorry about your coffee machine
