I saw this in [livejournal.com profile] oompalumpa's journal. (So that you don't duplicate Pete's and my efforts, the one from Sam Morse reads: FUCKING HAMSTERS ATE MY LAST POST AAA.) Let's have some fun and make historic posts as if the internet existed back in the day. You get geek points for correctly guessing the events of everyones' posts. The more obscure the reference, the higher the point value.

DH and I are going out to the club and to see a movie. I'll let you know what I think of "A Canterbury Tale" when we return. This may be a modern war movie I can stomach.

That's OK. Go ahead and tell. I had to Google yours. Very clever. I enjoyed the hunt.

I had some trouble finding an appropriate date

As a German, I can only remember bad days. But then I found one. March 15th, 44 B.C.

Well, of course. Never heard of the term "in the ides of March"? That's when Gaius Julius Caesar was killed, the famous inventor of the calendar with the same name :-)

They name things only after dead people. The Julian calendar was invented by Julius Caesar, the diesel was named after Rudolf Diesel, and the x-rays were invented by Mr. X.

This knife was invented by Oliver Stanley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Stanley), a British politician, and we all know, that politicians love to stab. So Mr. Stanley invented this knife for efficient stabbing.

Emo kids? Weren't those invented by Emo and Bert?
From: (Anonymous)
I thought Bert was invented by Emu and Roy Hudd!

Dear friends - K. and I are fine for the moment, and are confident that the wind will turn and the traitors exposed as what they are. We are in hiding, yes, but we will be heard of, still. This I promise. We have many plans, and our energy and conviction is unbroken. May we meet again soon!

I told Franz Ferdinand to get up early, because we had to leave for Sarajevo. He said he hates traveling to foreign countries. God, why are men such wimps? I told him he should grow up or just drop dead.

She *is* rumoured to have been quite the bitch, though.
Nicely done :-D!

Romy Schneider played Kaiserin Sissi, who was killed when she was already a widow (1898 in Geneva). The wife of Prince Franz Ferdinand, Princess Sophie Maria Josephine Albina Chotek countess of Chotkova and Wognin, was killed together with her husband in Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914, which was used as a pretext by the German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Austrian Emperor to start World War I.

Oups!

I thought she played that princess as well.
:/
I'm getting my films mixed up here.

Correct :-).
They both died on the 15th, under dubious circumstances.

Not really. Start one. I'd join. I don't know how far back LiveJournal allows us to backdate entries, but that could be a lot of fun. If you created new sock puppet accounts for the effort, it might become a problem for LJ. I'll check the terms of service to see if that would violate anything.

This is a very critical project. I hope we've ordered enough concrete. Fortunately, Walter, the stupid chatterbox, has got a bad memory.

Correct. And Erich Honecker was one of the main organizers of the wall. I chose the nick "Donkey" because of one of his (in)famous quotes: "Den Sozialismus in seinem Lauf halten weder Ochs noch Esel auf" (roughly translated: neither bull nor donkey can stop the progress of socialism).

And - since you liked it - here's another one, a bit more cynical:

There must be a leak somewhere in the prow, I need to check it. Hell, the last batteries went dead, so I have to use a candle.

I ran just such an area on an old FidoNet BBS called "The Philosopher's Log" and it was put out on the EchoMail system. The comment about the Atari really brought back old memories. It could have been a direct quote. ;)
