Except for some of the Republicans who have no hearts...

There is no one presidential candidate that completely satisfies all my political needs. As [livejournal.com profile] happydog prompted, what aspects of each candidate, if any, would you take to create the perfect presidential candidate for you?

Of course, I'd start with a solid Democratic foundation, a populist who wasn't to the manor born. My foundation would be John Edwards. He's the personification of the American Dream of humble beginnings leading through hard work to success and comfort. Despite the Southern drawl, which usually grates on my auditory sense, he truly sounds caring and compassionate towards others. His point of there being two Americas is spot on like nobody else has nailed it. Though I like most of what he says, he's lacking in a few areas onto which I would graft aspects of the following candidates.

From the Democrats, I would take the sharp objection to the Iraq War of Joe Biden and Dennis Kucinich's nay vote on the resolution to give the idiot pResident authorization to fuck everything up. I would also take Kucinich's health care plan for universal single payer coverage. Add Obama's enthusiasm and fresh perspective. Mike Gravel's positions on same-sex marriage, capital punishment and marijuana are excellent. From Clinton, I'd add the pragmatism and determination she's always shown.

What would I take from the Republicans? For sure, the current field is pretty slim pickings. Since they all seem to be trying harder to be bigger assholes than that moron Bush with regards to torture and Iraq (except for McCain who still has a shred of decency and a long memory of what torture really is), I'd chop all of that crap away. Macho posturing to make up for their tiny penises doesn't serve the country.

There's nothing about Thompson that I can even stomach. It's creepy as hell that he's got his trophy wife who is young enough to be his grandchild and his little daughter both cuddling his geezer ass. He's an actor and that artifice has already been dangerous to the country. I can't think of anything about Romney, who seems as plastic as a Ken doll, that wasn't better when he was pretending to have liberal leanings. I'd keep McCain's position on torture. He should know and all the other pussy bastards who never even served in the military should shut the fuck up about it. I like Ron Paul's ballsy votes on the Iraq War authorization and the attempts to erode our civil liberties. His position on the useless war on drugs is also sensible. He does want to ditch all kinds of government agencies saying that they're not Constitutional, but he supports the unConstitutional position of being anti-abortion. When I didn't know much about Huckabee, I liked his folksy style, but knowledge of his policies and allegiances completely turned me off.

If only we could pick and choose, things might be a little less divisive. I think the Founders had a better idea when they created the structure of the government to have the winner of the presidential election become president and the runner up become vice-president. So much of the nasty shitstorm the past few decades would have been avoided had bipartisanship not become such a dirty word.

EDIT: Here is a link that lets you directly compare each candidate side-by-side.

Don't worry. I'll be shouting from the levee tops by November.

I hate Huckabee. The guy actually said in 1992 that people with AIDS should be isolated in internment camps!

First of all, in 1992, people knew how HIV is transmitted. Second of all, the guy didn't recant his views when they were made public.

Do we really want this clown in charge of the country? He's scary.

Plus, he sucks that crucifix HARD. That the Repukes have been taken over by the Christofascists is why I'll never vote for any of them again. I can't stand that pro-lie plank in their national platform. It's scary that they don't even see that being anti-abortion is establishing a religious tenet and against the First and Fourth amendments to the Constitution.

None of the above

Too bad we can't vote for 'None of the above' and it actually stick. Imagine an election where all the candidates suck so bad, nobody wins and we have to do it again until somebody decent jumps on.
