Last weekend we initiated two people: Nic and Mike. Nic got his Second and Mike got his First. Good for them. After the ritual, Nic asked if there was someone standing behind him and to his right. No, but that's where Ken's picture and the box of Ken's ashes were. Ken's picture had fallen over as though he had fainted from the excitement of seeing his student get his Second Degree.
Litha ritual Saturday evening was good too. Lots of attendees. It had been cloudy all day and rained earlier so it wasn't blasting hot. That's always a plus, especially since I wore my tabard. The community breakfast the next day was fun. I hadn't seen a lot of those people for such a long time. We infested the hell out of La Madeleine. That food is so good, though. The croissants evaporate directly into your bloodstream in a flash of pastry goodness. The tomato scare has me craving the damned things so I indulged in some tomato basil soup. I figured salmonella cannot live in soup.
The book proposal and a sample chapter are submitted. Now I wait. Dorothy Morrison agreed to write the foreword so I sent her the manuscript. Progress continues. In the meantime, I've jumped back into "Ruxandra" armed with the second-hand tips from Laura of the Pen to Press seminar she took. The plotting presentation she recreated for us last week was phenomenal. I've reworked the plot to have a better rhythm. The first four chapters will build a bit slower and I won't spend as much time as I had originally outlined at the farm in Fagaras. My goal is to have the first draft done by December.
There are two more eggs under the dove in the tree out front. Her first clutch has flown off and she'll have two more birdies sometime next weekend probably. Just in time for the fireworks on the Fourth of July. I'm not going to do anything except housework and writing for those three days. I've also got two house projects I'd like to accomplish.
My European vacation is off. I didn't get nearly as much in taxes as I had expected and most of it is going to go to the mechanic I take my car to day after tomorrow. I noticed a noise a week or so ago and didn't think much of it until the noise got louder and more expensive-sounding. *le sigh* My dear friends in Switzerland are über understanding. Like many others, it's tough for me to even keep up since prices increase on a daily basis. I don't even splurge on much. I cannot wait for this country to get out of the fucked up Iraq War and stop wasting billions of our tax dollars enriching Halliburton, Blackwater and the military industrial cockstains.
Instead, I'm going up to Shreveport for their PPD on Lammas weekend. They want me to speak on ethics. Why not get into the groove of plugging the book? I might as well get my feet wet with a warm audience of people I already know and like and who know and like me. I've also got a gig in Lafayette for their Metaphysical Fair in November. Slow progress is better than no progress.
On a trivial note, the hamster metaphor I've promulgated for years is pretty entrenched in the weekly writers' group. Laura even had t-shirts made up using a variant with a picture of a hamster and its wheel. I used it at work in an IM today while I was resetting a password. I think the guy liked it a lot and will eventually use it himself. Thank the workplace deities tomorrow is Friday and I got three fairly hefty tasks completed on my checklist today. Two big things to concentrate on tomorrow and then the weekend and its respite.
I hope the rest of your lives are going as well if not better.
