Quitting procrastinating is so damned hard. I let stuff pile up and stare at the pile until I'm sick of seeing it before I get off my dead ass and do anything about it. A nice double dose of caffeine helped me tackle the downstairs today. I dragged stuff up to the attic that I didn't want to see anymore and threw crap out I couldn't use. Even though accomplishment feels good, I still seem to need a cattle prod to get me to do it.

Now I have to move everything away from the wall where PenguinPete is going to install my CAT5 cable this Sunday. I've got to hunt down where I stashed the router. I also need to seriously consider if I want to keep all the computer parts in the office or stash them in the attic where I don't have to look at them all the time. When I need something, I could go up and get it rather than have it cluttering up my office space constantly.

Surfing job postings on Monster and elsewhere continues to be unfruitful. I sent off some inquiries last week, but nothing this week has looked promising. Something decent will come along. The Goddess won't let me starve.

What info were you looking for networking wise? If you worried about linux behind a router don't worry too much. If it's set to dhcp it will get the address from the router and take care of everything. :) I had this nice suprise when my roommate stuck the router on that linux just adapted and I didn't have to do a thing. For running cat5 cable though you can get clips to do it but you might want to get a stud checker or something before you drill holes and thread line. You can get face plates for it though. I have one but never got to installing it.

PenguinPete is doing all the wiring work.

Do I put the router between the DSL modem and the computers or put the DSL modem on this box, turn it into a server and hang other boxen off it like that?

Well if you already have a router you might as well use it. What you do then is have the dsl modems cat5 go into the uplink on the router. And then plug in the other computers to the various cat5 link ports(usually 1-4 and up some use 1 port as an uplink or extra port).

In a computer it can do it but can be a bit more hassle to setup. It would need 2 ethernet cards in it and probably a hub. The adsl then would plug it's outgoing cat5 into one ethernet card and then the computer would have a cable from the second ethernet card to the uplink on a hub. Then you have to go into the computer and make some network settings giving each ethernet card it's own address. The one connected to the modem would end up with 2 addresses an internal and an external. Then you would have to set up firewalling. So it's a bit more work than just putting a router off of the adsl modem and plugging all the other computers cat5 into the router.

Even if you use a router box you can still have an internal server on the network plugged into the router. The router will automatically give all machines an internal address and firewall them all and you should be able to look at the server machines interal address and get stuff from it. The internal addresses are got via dhcp.

Well if you were up for moving, I have seen several job leads here in the Lakeland area.

mother is alive. I don't blame him. She's a major sweetie. I don't want to leave either because then I'd be deprived of her humor and cooking tips.

But there's always nin_man's humor and my cooking :P

Eeep, procrastination.

Exams in a week. Tell me all about it. Still, it's only 9:20 am on a Sunday and I'm already out of bed.

Anyway, home networking is one area of geekery where I may be able to help a little. The nicest solution is if you have a router with the ADSL modem built-in, of course - one little plastic box does everything. In the student house where I live now, we have a router without modem. So we got an ADSL modem, but it turned out that the modem was too clever - it was trying to do most of the router's work, where the router just expected a completely dumb modem that just passes the data through. But that problem soon took care of itself when the modem broke... so we now have a Linux box with the free USB modem plugged into it doing that job. Which works, but has its disadvantages such as noise and power consumption.
So anyway - beware of too-clever modems. They'll make things harder.

Good luck with the job search. I'm glad I don't need to do that yet :-) And I'll probably just stay in University for as long as they'll let me...
