...embarrassment you feel for someone else who is clearly acting like a fool? I felt that for John Sidney McCain III last night watching him on "Saturday Night Live" with Tina Fey. The writing for the QVC spoof was brilliant. The GOP always tries to sell people crap they don't need. I can't imagine why he would think that doing that show would be good for him as a candidate. Nobody will EVER mistake him for a hip person. The sketch only made him look desperate and willing to do anything. I know I should have been relishing the train wreck that it was, but I felt bad for the man. There are two possibilities why it didn't bother him.

1. He may not care whether he wins. There may be some vindictive part of him that wants the GOP to go down in flames the way a few of his planes did during his Navy career. He may want the assholes that engineered his defeat by smear in 2000 to fail spectacularly. That's why he's been gleefully slinging mud and lying so vociferously over the past few months.

2. He may know that Republican operatives are secure in their knowledge that the election is already stolen for them. They have the technology and the lack of scruples to use it. They'll be challenging enough ballots in predominantly Democratic areas to suppress their votes and skew the results. The shonky software from the biased companies that build the touchscreen machines may have back doors that will provide the outcome they want rather than reflect reality.

Of course, he may just be a clueless fuckwit. I felt bad for him at any rate, which makes me overly generous.

Sallie's Day of the Dead ritual last night was long as usual. I dragged my friends away around 9:30. I was tired and my feet were hella sore. We spent over four hours in the Holt Cemetery yesterday. This year, we had some testosterone to help. Sam came (after a few phone calls to remind him). Debbie and Lindy's husbands totally rocked, and Mike from Baton Rouge provided both muscle and mouth. It helped to have a lawnmower and two weed whackers.

We were hugely friendly to everyone, saying we were with CPWC and working to respect the ancestors. One family came by, at first suspicious, then we said that we wanted to do something for the graves of the veterans who served the country. Their loved one was a veteran, and we thanked them for his service. By the time they left, we were all tearfully thanking each other and getting the warm fuzzies. Thirteen of us managed to make about a half an acre of the cemetery look like somebody cared about it.

That damned cat is still on walkabout. We went looking for him in the backyard of the neighbor's house yesterday afternoon. There's so much junk over there; it's like Disneyland for cats. I also didn't know that they had been feeding neighborhood strays until I saw two big bowls of cat food near the back door. I hope he's still around and maybe getting sick of being cold at night and on his own. Hubby stapled flyers all over the light poles in the neighborhood. We've got an ad on Craigslist. We'll be checking the animal shelter every week. If it's possible to get him back, we will. The younger cat, Minou, doesn't have anyone but us to play with now, and she's acting like she misses him.

I think McCain is a clueless fuckwit. Why else would he pick Palin without vetting her first?

Speaking of clueless fuckwits, I read on snopes.com that when That Bitch was mayor of Wasilla, she decided to make rape victims pay for their own testing!

Oh yeah. I saw that too. She also fired the librarian for not banning books she didn't like, but then had to rehire her when the townspeople got pissed. Then there's Troopergate, the money for the Bridge to Nowhere, the contractors who built part of her house while they were building the sports arena, her son's hasty enlistment in the military to avoid jail and a plethora of other things that make her unfit for high office. Palin is certainly no paragon.

Palin and rape kits

Not actually true. Potentially possible, but there's no evidence one way or the other.

Wasilla police chief, not Palin is on record for this.

Nothing on snopes supports your statement, although there is an editorial comment involved (and not discussed by snopes) about Palin charging rape victims for their kits.

I agree with you re the SNL skits -- he just seemed a sad old man.

However, I cannot find it in my heart to feel sorry for McCain as he has brought himself to this end. His journey began many, say 50 or so, years ago. I could feel sorry for some of his earlier times but not at all since his political years. He's reaping a lot of sowing.

As for Palin: she seems not to know neither Civics nor the Constitution; her choice for VP was heartbreaking.

Ah, well.

Didn't see SNL last night, but the Simpsons tonight was hysterical. The opening was a voting joke thing. If you didn't catch it, I'm sure someone will post it on Youtube by tomorrow.

However, isn't SNL having an "election night special" tomorrow night, showing all their political spoofs of the season at once?

I don't care how foolish he made himself last night. I don't feel sorry for him and his SEVEN HOUSES, just like I don't feel bad for the dimwits on Judge Judy (or any other reality show).

I vote "clueless fuckwit". There's too much evidence to suggest otherwise.
