My fellow Americans, please refrain from saying you don't "believe" in climate change. Simply admit you got poor grades in science and that you don't understand any of it. You can also say you don't "believe" in locomotives, but I guarantee that if you're sitting on the tracks when the Sunset Limited goes by, you will find yourself dead and the coroner will find you all over the place.

There are two and a half scenes left to finish on Ruxandra. If I'm good, I'll get at least two of them done today during playoff games. If I'm really good, I'll get all of it written today. I will be ever so happy to get it done. Chances are that it won't happen. There's still work to do on the piece that someone else will read aloud at the writers' group tomorrow evening.

Speaking of climate change, this cold weather can just go back up north where it came from. Since I had to work yesterday, I took a box of donuts from the evilly-delicious Krispy Kreme to share with co-workers. They were cold by the time I got to the office, which didn't take long considering the early hour and the speed at which I normally drive. This weather is for the birds. If I could migrate further south, I would. Yuck.

Holy cow. You do have a nasty streak there... I actually looked it up, since I couldn't imagine it being all that bad ;-).
Now: I'm sure you don't have any winter tires, so do drive carefully, you hear? Even in the south, water freezes way before hell does :-D.

But there's your silver lining, if it helps at all: You'll be over 10 again next week!

Cold isn't even picturesque down here like a charming chalet covered in snow. In 2008, when it snowed that one day a few weeks before Christmas, it was kinda cute to see the white stuff clinging to the wreaths on the streetcars. There's not much fun in it except as a novelty. Take a picture and move on while morons who can't drive on normal days try to navigate snow-slicked streets.

The bummer is that on New Year's Day, we had the air conditioning on because it was so warm.

It isn't picturesque in cities here, believe you me :-).

Wish you all a speedy recovery!

yeah. The only time snow is "picturesque" is when you've got a big pile of DRY firewood right near the stove, and the larder stocked with food to last till the thaw, and your boss lets you log in from home :)

Hehehe...

Although: Go see fakiiri's pics of trees and icicles! they DO look rather picturesque.

My sympathies for the weather and the climate change deniers.

Stay warm and safe! Remember, it's not your driving that's likely to cause the accident, so watch out for the idiots.

Thanks, you can keep the cold. We have more.

I hear it was colder in Nebraska yesterday than at the poles. And Nebraska is South of me.

People use the word "believe" in an odd way. I remember someone telling me he didn't believe in credit cards. I was tempted to whip one out and ask him to touch it.

That said, climate is something that does have quite a bit of faith swirling around it. There are a lot of people out there that essentially treat their chosen position as religion. Doubt is not allowed and everyone else is wrong. There are holy books they will quote, but they have no understanding of them. Chances are they haven't actually read them beyond the quotes.

This is unfortunate, as this kind of bullshit on both sides of an issue obscures the actual problem and annoys anyone trying to have a discussion.

In my view, the problem with belief stems from the way religion has intruded into the public arena as a foundation upon which to base secular legislation. Saying you don't believe in this or that when clearly those things exist makes people sound stupid. It's far more honest to say, "I do not support [insert your religion's sinful act]." Belief is for the realm of the unknowable, not for facts and figures.

That's a point. Global warming is happening and has been happening for over 12,000 years, since the start of the Holocene Era. Those facts are irrefutable and belief is not an issue.

Belief does enter into it when we are being told that it is entirely caused by man, like we created interglacials before mammals even existed.

True, climate does change in cycles, but what makes you think humans aren't doing their worst to accelerate it?

They may be doing their worst like a mosquito trying to kill an elephant singel-handedly. The elephant won't notice ;)

Humans are not yet gods. Not by a long shot. Their hubris is, however, amazing.

Do not discount the harm that can come from small things. The mosquito may not be able to drain the elephant dry of its blood, but one mosquito can give an elephant a disease made up of bacteria or viruses smaller than itself. Remember too that one bee sting may not kill a person, but a swarm of killer bees certainly can. You're underestimating the raw destructive power of large numbers of small minds.

You don't have to be a god or have god-like powers if there are enough of you. That's not hubris; that's reality.

Why do you think we up north want *more* of it!? We already have enough of it.
