Pat Robertson needs to die in writhing pain for all the obnoxious shit he spews. He continues to reinforce the stereotype of the ignorant fundamentalist Christian. This bullshit about Haiti's supposed "pact with the devil" is just the latest in a long line of ignorant rantings by a nasty old bastard who has outlived whatever utility he may have possessed. Because some of these idiots cannot be bothered to learn science or history, it would never occur to the doddering old Pat that the reason for Haiti's earthquake is the geology of tectonic plates. The reason for Haiti's lack of resources and impoverished response is that their government is generationally dysfunctional because of meddling by other countries and the rancid Catholic Church that decrys evils of birth control but not the evils of subsequent poverty and overpopulation.

The Haitian relief special, Hope for Haiti, the other night was on almost every channel. Hubby clicked past Fox and said they're not carrying it. I told him of course not, their hope for Haiti had already occurred when the earthquake hit and killed thousands of poor, black people. May all of their stable of braying jackasses rot in their hell with nasty old Pat too.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] blackbyrd2 that the recent Supreme Court decision giving corporations a pass to spend as much money to buy political candidates is a bad move. Instead of giving more power to corporations, they need to strip them of power. They need to void that bogus snippet of conversation by some previous corporate cocksucker that purported to give corporations "personhood" and make the people who run companies personally responsible for the good or ill a company does. Instead, the SCOTUS has made what amounts to bribery of elected officials legal. Charming. Why is it that the right wingnuts only call them "activist judges" when they rule in favor of the people? You don't hear those idiot teabaggers whining about this decision. Of course, the Wall Street Journal and Fox are having their circle jerk parties.

The worst about all the above is that I was just starting to have a spark of hope for humanity. I couldn't light a stick of incense with the tiny ember of my hope right now.

Wish I could point out something hopeful, here....

Maybe this: As obvious as the whole thing gets, the people MUST sometime get a clue and put an end to it all, as long as we have a hint of democracy left.
On the other hand: That's what people waited for back then in Germany...

So just be glad you don't have to follow Italy too closely. OR Switzerland, for that matter.

The people, especially of the USA, are mostly comprised of idiots. They can tell you all the rules for a football/basketball/baseball game and how "American Idol" works, but they have no clue about how the government is supposed to work. Another problem with most people is that they don't give a shit about anything that doesn't directly affect them and don't know how other things directly affect them because they don't care to find out.

I'm getting outrage fatigue. I wish I could stop caring. I wish I could stop paying attention to some of it.

Same here. I had stopped reading papers for a while last year. Maybe that will be the only option in the end...

At times when I'm feeling a bit less depressed, I am still grateful for the fact that some are still fighting, though. That they still produce a weekly/monthly paper full of insight, clever ideas and historical background, even if they know that they're preaching to an ever smaller choir of old hippies and other useless dinosaurs...

(We're whistling in the woods, here. Even if our country might not look all that run down on the surface, the core is so rotten it makes me wonder if we should not put an end to this sad experiment and join the EU. Not that this would be in any way helpful. Just put an end to the embarrassment, somehow... )

I fear for this country. 39% of Americans think the government should "stay out of Medicare."

I think they should let California secede and send all the smart liberal people there.

I think it was Mona Lisa Overdrive or some other cyberpunk book by Gibson that was first published as a short story in Omni magazine (yes, that long ago!) -- all I really remember from the story (aside from the female engineered assassin) was that the world was run by a corporate oligarchy and that nations were quaint relics of the past that were there as figureheads, sort of like the Queen of England. We've been on this road for decades now, it seems. IIRC, it was not a "fun" place to live.

I really don't like wishing for people to die, but we need one or more of those "activist" judges to kick it or retire in the next year or 2 so Obama can put another judge on the SCOTUS bench.

I would LOVE to see personhood stripped from corporations. I understand about free speech, but a coporation isn't a person and so does NOT enjoy "free speech" - otherwise, what's to stop them from lying about thier products with impunity (aside from buying elections).

I wonder how long it's going to take before the phrase "Corporate Overlord" isn't a joke anymore.

I'm all with you on good ol' Pat. I heard what he said and my jaw dropped. The world will be a better place when he joins the ranks of Jerry Faldwell in fertilizing the earth.
