Electricity restored!
Dec. 10th, 2011 10:57 amIt's been at least six hours since the morons who wrecked on the street in front of my house took out two light poles. I woke at 4:30-ish this morning to go to the bathroom and found the power off. A glance at the flashing lights and stopped vehicles outside provided the explanation. This is why drinking and driving do not mix. Entergy deserves kudos for working from the dark of night to a gloomy gray December morning so that we can keep our homes warm, our food cold and our computers humming, This is the third time since I've lived here that some idiot with poor driving skills has killed our power.
At the beginning of the week, I was in New York for training. The instructor went over time every day. There was so much material to cover, and he covered it exhaustively. I don't know how some of you do air travel on a frequent basis without going insane. Some airlines charge bag fees, which are the first unpleasantness of the process. The security theater of TSA is the second unpleasantness. There don't seem to be any flights that don't contain shrieking infants, which is the third unpleasantness. The fourth are the seats on the aircraft. They must have been designed by a chiropractor to be as harmful as possible to the body so that you'd want to go for an adjustment after each flight. The fifth is the people who bring steamer trunks onto the plane and expect them to fit in overhead bins. That's partly the airlines' faults for charging bag fees.
I have to give New York credit. Getting from JFK to Manhattan is easy. Take the Air Train to the subway and in an hour, you're downtown. The worst thing about it was trying to get through the subway turnstile with luggage. I got stuck momentarily twice. A mighty shove and a volley of cursing remedied the situation. I am thankful the bag has wheels. There was a lot of walking, and the blocks in New York are larger than the blocks in New Orleans, especially the cozy blocks in the French Quarter.

Date: 2011-12-10 05:12 pm (UTC)Let me spare you the sermon about power lines belonging underground.
Glad to hear they're good at rebuilding, instead ;-).
What airline was that? I find American quite tolerable, actually. Apart from the shrieking infants, of course. They should definitely set apart a (sound-proof) section for those...
People will be people. I really can't see how all (?) airlines seem to go all bonkers about - say - a pocket knife, then let passengers lug all kinds of incredibly bulky and unmanageable trash on board. They so clearly tell you what's allowed and what not, but once you're through security, nobody seems to give a crap any longer.
