A reasonable scheme came to me while getting the groceries. Everyone will get a flash drive and a printed explanation of how to back up their data. I know only the tiniest percent of my friends do it. And I also know that I would have to listen to them wail if their hard drives crashed. I also know that some of them think that because they don't have any spreadsheets, word processor documents or presentations, they don't have any data. They would cry to lose those pictures and MP3s and such, which are data. For the win.

More pie dough is in the fridge awaiting being transformed into tiny, muffin-sized pies. The ones I made for the Peauxdunque Writers Alliance went over very well. Since I got my new stove and fridge, I'm going to branch out into savory pies. Dessert pies are too easy, especially with the dough being blended in the food processor. If you want to make crust, use vodka or another clear alcohol instead of water. Best two tips I ever got from Alton Brown.

Work is drowning me and wringing me out. There are too many things going on with my applications. I want some stability where they're just humming along. Not likely to see that for at least six months. I've requested that all fourth quarter work be postponed going forward. There is not enough coverage to get a damned thing done in December. People take vacations. There are change freezes. I want to do my year-end round up without stress. We'll see. I'll push back harder next year.

We had our annual condo association meeting kinda late this year. I must be insane because I let them elect me President. Stuff needs to get done, and I'm here a lot, so I might as well coordinate it. I've got a long list of improvements in process and infrastructure that I want to initiate. The two other officers are younger women. I hope they don't mind my aggressive style. I never try to hide my nature or opinions. They'll either cooperate or bail next annual meeting.

I'm hoping my bonus will be decent so I can buy a new car. The Saturn is twelve years old. I drove a Hyundai Veloster, and it totally rocks. I'd really like one of those or a Volkswagen Jetta. There's still a lot to do on the house. The windows aren't installed yet. They've been on order for two months, but I think the factory is backed up. Every time I go by it on a Saturday, the plant is working, which leads me to believe that they are doing well in this economy, but can't keep up with demand. I'll have to call them this week to see when I can expect installation.

That's another reason I can't go to Dallas for the hardware installation next week. All that stuff can be done remotely. I don't need to be physically there since they won't let anyone into the data center anyway. They are making me go to Richmond for the DR installation next month. Oh well. Best get it out of the way before Mardi Gras.

Hey - now that is one clever idea there!

Here's to them all listening to you closely. Even if those in doubt about pictures being data probably can't be helped :-p.

(I have in fact had one machine doing the sudden death number on me this fall. No backup would have terminated me on the spot, I'm sure...)

A bonus to buy a new car with?! I am bloody impressed, lady.
Very nice to hear you're not doing it all for peanuts, at least :-D.

The bonus won't be near the entire cost of a car. If I can get the amount I finance around two-thirds the price of the car, I'll be happy.

Definitely earning the kibble. Synapses lit up like a Christmas tree.

Do you want to post those instructions online? Because I still haven't backed this thing up to my terabyte drive yet and I'm feeling guilty about it.

I find I'm a lot like you in that I'm assertive about how I think procedures should be more efficient. I find myself telling co-workers to not be shy with me; if they have something they want or need to say, to say it. Then I hope for the best knowing if anyone is disgruntled there will be sniping behind my back. But at least they've been given an avenue to be open with me.

Here's to driving your new car to Virginia next month! They're putting you on a plane aren't they? I'm having separation issues with my pickup. Now that its mileage is up there well over 100k I just want to put money into it to make it driveable forever. I'd even replace the engine if needed. I love driving it.

Emailed the instructions to you. It was two pages of dense content. Too much to post on LJ.

I'd rather be thought pushy than never get anything done.

I won't drive to Virginia. The company will fly me there. That would be too much driving.

Two pages is too much

Technical people can easily handle instructions like that, but your average man on the Clapham omnibus won't bother.

Of course, I don't know your folks so maybe they'll be fine with it, however I'd suggest simplifying that down a bit before going gold with it!

There are several users who bitch to us about how terrible the manual is, and as far as I can tell it's almost entirely because the paper version is big.
- TBH I don't have any sympathy for some of them anymore because they refused to read the quickstart guide either.

Those two pages include several different flavors of OS. They only have to deal with maybe a third of a page for their specific OS. I wouldn't make them wade through two pages of text for one version of a backup.

I see - yes, that does makes sense!

1/3 page sounds like a pretty decent length.
