After a bit of fiddling, I got the latest version of Ubuntu loaded onto my Toshiba laptop. For anyone who wants to do that themselves, just go to the Ubuntu website and follow the instructions to create a bootable USB stick. It took longer to download the iso than it did to load the OS onto the computer. Right now, it's loading 265 updates. Last night I didn't have time to reboot it for that.

Hubby wants me to ditch the Windows 8 on his laptop in favor of Ubuntu. I'll do that when he's paying attention to a baseball game.

We're close to getting the remodeling in gear. We've hit some disagreement about the flooring downstairs. He wants to replace the carpet and have tile only in the kitchen, foyer, and bathroom. I want tile all over. We may have a compromise with more tile back by the fireplace and patio door, with carpet in the living and dining room. We may have to arm wrestle for it.

Everything else, except the tile surround in the kitchen and the exact paint colors is nailed down. The big stuff is selected. I need to run the numbers on my spreadsheet and pick a date when we're willing to endure the chaos. As soon as the schedule is obtained, I'll post pictures of the before. Then I'll whine like a ninny during the derangement. Then I'll squee like a fangirl and post pictures of the after when it's done.

Speaking of kittens, the cats are doing fine together. They're not best of buddies, but they tolerate each other. Arya has turned out to be a fine cat. She sometimes reminds me of Sonny when she gets cuddly on my lap.

Order tiles that look like a carpet. Problem solved. :-)

That's a great idea. It's a good compromise.

Picking paint colors is what stalls me out. I would love to avoid that if I could. Why do I feel like I should remind you that whatever time frame they give you, you should double it. Unless you put 'time is of the essence' in your contract, the contractor will take his/her sweet damn time.

Should I get this city loan, I'm going to wind up as General Contractor. I know no one in this county or the next one is going to take the time to fiddle with all my little tasks. Unless it's a major remodel, no one feels it's worth their time. Still anxious to get going on it though.

I can't wait for pictures! But I will. 8D

Yeah, the flooring folks said it would be a week. I'm thinking two weeks minimum. I remember how long it took the guy next door to get the floor done over there. Living in a reno isn't the best of experiences, but it couldn't be worse than the week after Hurricane Katrina. The kitchen and bathroom folks are great. I've already gotten a couple of glowing reviews about them. They are super fast.

Do you have any of those honey-do guys around who handle small jobs? They specifically advertise that they're like rent-a-husbands. Or maybe some retired dude who has skills and time and a wife who wants him out of her hair.

Well now there's a good idea. The only other option being to hang at the corner store and hire some day-laborers who don't speak English. I believe I've seen an ad or two for handy guys like that in the weekly Shopper. And with the estate sale I've met a few people in town I can ask if they know someone who knows someone.

Thanks for the heads up on that!
