My FORMER project. I gave it the old college try and didn't even get a feeble "rah, rah, sis boom bah" out of it. The analogy of trying to rescue a drowning person who is fighting you comes to mind.
The consolation is that you tried. If you can still look at yourself in the mirror afterwards, without reaching for a gun, then you have nothing to regret.
What was the breaker, getting professional help or did it even get that far?
She simply refused to throw anything out. It was down to random, crumpled newspaper clippings and old magazines. She even smoothed out a piece of Christmas wrapping paper that was crumpled and torn and defiantly said she was keeping it.
I asked her why she was keeping all the trash if she seriously planned to off herself. She wouldn't be needing any of it. She certainly can't enjoy it if it's buried under a mountain of other trash. She started complaining about not having money again and I pointed out that all the little trinkets cluttering up her apartment cost a lot of money collectively, money that she was given to get an education and to better herself.
She needs professional help and I'm not it. People that irrational cannot be reasoned with. My energy is better utilized going towards others who will not only actively participate in their betterment, but who will also be appreciative of the effort.
Sounds like she has really spiraled down. That's too bad, but mostly for the folks that have tried to help. I have only met her a few times, but I know from personal experience that depression really sucks when you're in the middle of it. (you think I am accident prone now, not even close) It does get better, but not by itself. I would not object speaking with her (I can be much more objective as I am not as close as you are) just to tell her she needs a shrinks and probably anti-depressants. Then you can kick her in the @ss.
It was a very shallow spiral as she was always on a bummer as long as I've known her. She won't go see a shrink. She won't take meds. She doesn't want anything constructive in her life. Oh well. Nothing I can do about it.
