My latest Frankensystem won't recognize the NIC. I've tried two so far. One was a 3Com with no known defects. I'm not sure the PCI slots are not in some way toasted. Bummer. I'll have to try all of them soon to see if they are all bad. I won't even have a chance until Wednesday at the earliest.

Oh well. I've got a new writing project. I'm going to give my previous story to the writers' group tomorrow night to finish critiquing and then start in earnest on the new work. The book will be a biography of a local doctor who spent his professional life as an abortion provider even back in the day when abortion was illegal. He's quite a colorful character and his old friends are going to be great sources of info on him. He designed many of the instruments used in the procedure today. He was a great pioneer and quite the philanthropic type, keeping prices very low when he knew that poor women couldn't afford to be taken advantage of further than they had been already.

I've got to scounge up some time to decide whether or not to order custom made rings for our wedding or buy something more nondescript locally. There are these fabulous rings I found on the Internet that are Mayan glyphs that Corpsman loved dearly. They would honor his heritage magnificently, but they'll cost us about $400 for both. I've got to decide soon or the artist won't have enough time to get them done by our wedding date. On one hand, I'm thinking that it's only money and I'll get a permanent job soon. On the other hand, that amount represents a mortgage payment, several months' worth of phone bills or a couple of month's worth of car insurance payments. Yeesh!

Difficult decision...

...on the rings. But after all, you're hopefully going to have them for a looong time ;-)?
This writing project sounds interesting, to say the least - hope you get it published!
And then - on to fame and riches!!

Yeah, I think I've decided. If I'm going to die with a ring on my finger, it's going to be one that really makes a statement. We'll both be back at work again soon and our money worries will ease. I shouldn't let a short-term problem negatively influence something that should be a long-term solution.

I'm starting the new writing project tomorrow. I turned in my final draft of the last thing I had been working on at the writers' group tonight. Now I get to do a lot of fun research and find out about this doctor. He sounds like someone I would have enjoyed associating with in life. He's certainly going to be a lot of fun to resurrect in print.

Good :-). I do hope things turn out well for you (two)!
The project sounds really exciting. Would you consider giving me a sneak preview ;-)?
I would love to see how it's coming along...

I just started outlining and scribbling notes. When I have a chapter done, I'll be happy to email it to you. Remind me in about a month after I've gotten to talk to everyone who is still alive that knew him. The writing will take a while since I want to do a thorough job of it.

Will do! This certainly will be interesting. Hope the old folks all have good memories ;-)!

Only going to comment on the Frankensystems...

as anything else is beyond the horizon of my shallow geekness. Well, not really. Your writing sounds interesting, though also sounds too much like hard work - biography would involve systematic, thorough research. Talking about writing though, I really liked the story you posted in your diary on UF some time ago. I think it was a UF short fiction contest or something.

Anyway, the Frankenboxes - I had one once with broken PCI slots. I probably still have the motherboard lying around. But it was only a 486 anyway, so it wasn't much of a loss, really. Well, good luck getting it working (or finding a replacement motherboard). Hmm, now I want to do some hardware tinkering again, but my stash is too far away. At least I have my new homebuilt PC working well now (that I've written about at length in my own journal).

Right. I need to do some physics now.

Don't suppose you know a goldsmith do you?

Good crafts(wo)men are hard to come by these days.

My wife and I had our rings made in Ireland.

But then, she's Irish, and I have some Irish in me, so it was a good fit for us. They are celtic knots and cost about $150.00.

If you can find a local goldsmith, he can likely make you a nice set of rings that have exactly what you want on them for a very reasonable price.

Hell, if I had my grandpa's equipment, I'd offer to do them for the cost of the gold to make them. But, his second wife sold off the forge piecemeal after he died.

If you can't find someone local, I know of a black/whitesmith (works both iron and precious metals) here, good guy, very open minded. I'll hunt him down and see what he'd charge if you like. (I'd just need pictures of the rings you want)
