We and the cats are glad to be home.
Oct. 5th, 2005 01:05 pmMy wonderful husband ensured the task of cleaning the fridge wouldn't be too horrible. Before we left, we ditched everything in it. Monday evening when we got back, it only took a few hours to clean out the minimal amount of mold that was in it. I've seen worse mold in my mother's fridge back when she was alive. I placed several open containers of baking soda in to alleviate the musty smell. The unit still works well and is now restocked with food.
Yesterday, I drove Corpsman's mother to her doctor appointment. We were in and out of Ochsner in less than an hour. She was amazed. I ran other errands and stopped by one of my student's store to see if she was OK. Everyone is more happy than usual to see each other. The hugs are longer and more clenching than the usual hugs of greeting.
Velvet has a HUGE amount of donated stuff in her house and driveway. I dropped over there Monday evening and grabbed a few things. I went over yesterday to get a few more things. There is a ton of food, blankets, clothes, toiletries, etc. that the Pagan communities up north sent us. I wish I liked Spam (the food product) because there are many tins of it on the shelf.
The grass is cut and the parish is collecting trash, but not debris. If it looks like it used to be a tree or part of a house, it will sit there for a while. I found out yesterday that all the tree and house debris is being cut into mulch instead of being hauled out to the coast to help preserve the wetlands. A Pagan FEMA guy assigned to down here has contacted the coven and is absolutely incensed at the waste. If nothing else, we should be doing something useful with all the debris so as to make its sacrifice less wasteful. There are piles and piles of it in a parking lot out by the airport. You can see them from Airline Highway growing ever more voluminous as the days progress. I'm going to make some phone calls either later today or starting tomorrow to see if I can get up the chain of command far enough to get this debris recycled appropriately. (Just tried the local parish number and it was busy.)
Holy shit, but there's a lot to do! I don't anticipate any boredom in my future for a long, long while.

Date: 2005-10-05 08:24 pm (UTC)First, frying the stuff up makes it more palatable.
Mixing it in with something which normally can handle a lot of salt is good too, such as fried potatoes.
Yes, it's a nice cholesterol bomb, and no, even this doesn't make it "good", just edible. It does, however, add some protein to a diet, and it doesn't take a lot to do this.
House debris ought to be reusable, unless it got covered in that toxic sludge.
Good luck with everything. I'm very glad to see you doing as well as you are. :)
You're not way to far off,
Date: 2005-10-05 09:07 pm (UTC)Leaving a few charcole briquettes in the fridge for a while may not be a bad idea eaither.
Nice to see you up and fizzy
Date: 2005-10-05 09:17 pm (UTC)What would it be good for? Making furniture? Plugging roofing holes? Shaped into cluebats and applied to appropriate politicans?

Date: 2005-10-05 10:06 pm (UTC)I finally got through to the parish number. The woman who answered the phone was just as pissed off about it as I am. She said she was so pissed, her boss wouldn't even give her the number of the person/agency coordinating debris removal. I'll have to find it on my own.
Glad to see you back!
