This thing is FAST now!
Jun. 4th, 2006 03:45 pmPete and I swapped out motherboards in my system today. Now I'm running a 1.7Ghz CPU with 512Mb of RAM. The problems I had been having with my sound are gone. I didn't even have to reinstall Linux. The chipsets of the old motherboard and the new one are the same. We did have to disable the onboard ethernet to use the NIC since the drivers didn't recognize the onboard one. Even after all the derangement of pulling the old motherboard out, installing the new one and having it not work, reverting to the old one and having it not work and reinstalling the new one, I'm fairly happy.
Even though I worked part of yesterday, I feel rested. I went into the office to apply vinyl tile to the bathroom. Nobody else had offered to do it and since I had done it before, I volunteered rather than wait for anyone else. I finished half of the application before my hands got really sore. They're still sore today, but they're better than yesterday. I decided to do the most obnoxious part first. All that cutting around the toilet was what stressed my hands. I used the template method, but the cutter got progressively duller requiring more effort. What is done looks good. I'll finish the rest some evening this week. I can't do it during regular hours because the phone will ring and interrupt me. I prefer contiguous time to do projects like that.
After I got home yesterday, Pete saved all my data on his external hard drive in preparation for today's brain transplant. Thankfully, we didn't need it as no OS reinstall took place. I may reinstall the OS next weekend in order to get everything working in top order. Also, I could install the latest versions of Java and Flash so that I can play certain games I like online. I know I shouldn't as some of them are addicting and I'll end up playing them too much to the detriment of my novel and other things. You only live once, so why not enjoy it, eh?
I ran all my other errands last evening. Those errands consisted of going to two different supermarkets since the really cheap one doesn't have everything I like to get. I don't have to leave the house today and I won't. The rest of the day is going to be restful. I might work on my novel some more, but I'm not going to do any more physical labor.
I'm happy on a few levels that Pete has gotten a place to live. It's good that he'll finally be able to leave his sister's house (and her obnoxious offspring) for the peace and quiet of his own place. It's also good that I'll get to help him shop for additional stuff he need to reestablish a household. He saved very little from the drowned apartment in Gentilly. While out looking for stuff he needs, I'll be able to scrounge for a couple of tables for my office that I need.
I can't think of anything else that's going on. I'm sure that if anything else occurs to me, I'll be back to post it as soon as I can.
