cake

Voodoo rituals are so much longer than any other religion's rituals I've ever witnessed. After standing in Sallie's temple for two and a half hours, I fled to the alley for some air and to find a place to park my carcass. It was freaking hot in there! I overheard someone complaining that they didn't have all the ceiling fans turned on and that they should turn them all on. They obviously didn't notice the shitload of burning candles on the altars under those fans. The two fans that didn't have altars near them were running. I'm sure Ms. Whiney-Pants wouldn't have been too happy to have a fire result. Of course, she should have known not to wear long sleeves on such a warm night. I couldn't stay for the whole ritual. My feet, knees and hips were protesting. I should have taken an Aleve before heading over there last night.

Finally the flurry of activity is over. October and the first part of November always kicks my ass. I'm looking forward to a quiet weekend. I have class, but they're going to be watching a documentary. I've got a good batch of students again. Initiation on Sunday went well. It's like graduation, only I'm both the teacher and the parent. I get to feel all proud and pleased. I didn't get weepy like I did when we initiated Ken and Trixie last year. Why their initiation made me cry still puzzles me.

Now I'm going to see how much I can get accomplished over the next several days. I've been taking St. John's wort in hopes that it will finally kick in and lift my mood. I thought I was on a better track from weekend before last when I got so much done. The weather has turned chilly which may induce me to do more. Today I'm going to research finding a forum host for info for those who want to get surgical sterilizations. I'm also going to inventory all the computer equipment I have prior to Pete coming over Saturday to build some more Frankensystems. I'd like to get about two or three done and put on Craigslist or Freecycle before Thanksgiving. The more space I create in my office by getting rid of stuff, the more room I'll have for projects important to me. I've also got to get Chapter 6 finished. I'm just going to slam something together and let it evolve in the editing and critiqueing process.

Let me know when you get back. I'll find a reason to head out that way.

I may have a couple of job interviews next week so the end of my period of unemployment may be in sight.

I guess you're right about Voodoo rituals... but the only ones I've been to have been outside. The last one being a drumming thing that went on for at least 3 hours. Good thing the "dancing" was mostly shuffling around the drummers in a circle.

(I'll never forget camping on the edge of the ritual field at Starwood, and going to sleep on the first night of the festival while there was a Voodoo ritual going on in the field. I had a vision of Baron Samedi driving by in a white Cadillac convertable with a red leather interior. He waved at me.)

I have been to some "EpiscoPagan" rituals that came close for length, however, but Voodoo wins by about 30 minutes.

Except for the Mambo, the Voudon are all in their twenties or early thirties. There aren't very many more mature people on that path. They danced and did these twirly moves and sang just about the whole time. I love the drumming, but I can't stand for that long without feeling like I've been beaten with a stick.

I'm trying to raise my mood and hopes and get out of the funk currently enveloping me. Having my bones, joints and muscles cause me such pain makes it harder.

1) Wicked cake, I think it's beautiful!!
2) When referring to Sallie, do you refer to Sallie Ann Glassman, famed Mambo in New Orleans?! If so, then you have me DULY impressed....

Mais oui. Elle est le seulement. *sigh* I want to learn some of those songs. If only Alice would record them, I'd listen to them over and over. He's going back into the studio in '07. I hope to hell his next tour brings him within a couple hundred miles of here. I'll drive as far as Shreveport to see him.

Me, I hear he's already been in the studios. Patience, fellow Trooper, it won't be long before he's on the road again! And I think you're awefully lucky to be able to attend her rituals, I've admired her for years.

She does fabulous, albeit long, rituals. I've been to loads of them since the old days of the Goddess Conferences.

As an old one-panel comic consisting of one vulture remarking to another vulture sitting with him in a tree with nothing on the horizon as far as the eye could see in the paper years ago was captioned: Patience hell, I'm gonna kill something.

*hugs*

Thanks. So far so good. I think the smell of my crockpot lemon chicken is going to have me drooling before the afternoon's over.

Of course she can't turn on the ceiling fans for the comfort of her guests. She doesn't believe in electricity, so everyone else must suffer accordingly.
You should try being her tenant. No fans or air conditioning allowed, and all windows must be kept closed and locked.

I wonder how not believing in something real works out for some people. Somehow I think it's not nearly as bad to believe in something that may not be real as it is to disbelieve something that is real. I heard a good one years ago. You can deny the existance of Greyhound busses all you like, but if you stand in front of one, it will run you over regardless of your lack of belief.

Nah, it's too hot down here to do without fans or air conditioning.
