In response to this completely fucktarded move, henceforth, my whole journal is going to be considered as such. I don't give two shits and a damn about some lazy-assed parent's kid's retinas peeling from the words I use, but I don't want any of them to wander in here for any reason.

To all those parents I say: If you want the village to be sanitized for your fucktrophy's convenience, then you're going to have to corral your little crack monkeys and make them act civilized in the village. Also, you're going to have to respect that there are some places that your monsters DO NOT FUCKING belong and keep them the hell out. Better yet, if you're so pathetically putrid at parenting, get a fucking abortion.

Whoa!

What little bugger has been stepping on your toes/yelling into your ears/vomiting over your pants - or whatever it is they do...?

And what do you mean "henceforth"? You been holding back a lot? Ever...?

New LJ horseshit came down the pike. If you note, at the top on the navigation bar, there is now a little flag dealie that lets you flag posts for all kinds of reasons. Have a look at it and see what's missing.

By henceforth, I mean that I reset the defaults under my profile so that unless you're an adult, you can't read my journal (in a perfect world). If you'd like, I'll get you the link to show you what the brou-ha-ha is about.

Oh - okay. I got at least a hint in the meantime... Need I be awfully concerned? This does not sound like something I'd like to bother about at all, to be honest. Is it "lets you" or "requires you"...?!

So sure, a link would be helpful indeed, if it's not too much of a hassle :-).

Not tonight anymore, though...

No. You don't have anything to worry about. You're always so decent and kind. Only curmudgeons such as myself need be concerned and not even me anymore. Fuck them all with a dirt-caked auger.

Thanks for linking!

Eh, well - I have been using my four letter words, too, occasionally. But I could hardly care less if some concerned parents keep their offspring from reading them...

I officially declare myself "unable to be arsed" ;-p.

On the other hand: What an utterly American thing to do... Not helpful for reputation here, and stuff :-).

register your age on your profile ... why should I do this?
If I dont do this I have to click thru the carp to get to your post.

Its all pretty pointless anyway, the firewall at work (when we were allowed to see LJ) used to regularly bar my friends page because of the 4-letter word content that regularly appeared in one friends posts. Most nanny software will do just that if you make your post rude enough.

Yeah, you've got a point. I don't really care that people know I'm achieving old fart-dom, but others might. Hmmm, I might add twenty years to my age and make myself even older. Better yet, everyone could put their birth year as 1901. That would make us all centarians and really fuck with their statistics.

Um... one question from someone outside the commonwealth: do you really have CONTENT filter? I've never understood this behaviour by US Americans. On one side you have to watch your 'foul' language, on the other side weapons (and hence violence/war) is good or at least acceptable.

When I say s***, m***f*** or something like that here, they might look at me with a raised eyebrow, but nothing special would happen. There was a crime series on German TV, where one of the chief inspectors said at least 10 times s***, and it wasn't even beeped out. On the other side, parents disliked Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner & Coyote for the violence. But since a lot of US American violent series flooded German TV, the threshold of suffering sunk a lot.

Did you ever think of picidae (http://www.picidae.net)? It converts text content into graphics, so content filters won't work.

I, on the other hand, think German squeamishness about inanimate objects (weapons) is quite silly.

Violence is a part of this world. Sticking your fingers in your ears and pretending it doesn't exist will not make it go away.

That's a nonsense point of view. If violence is part of the world, why don't you want to change it? The same argument was used, when the locomotive and the automobile had been invented. Why use a car? We have always travelled by coach!

The acceptance of violence is silly, not the attempt to avoid it.

Re: "unless you're an adult" ==

From: [identity profile] jpaganel.livejournal.com
"Changing it" and "pretending it doesn't exist" are not the same thing. Your transportation analogy does not hold. You are not avoiding violence, you are avoiding depiction of violence.

The absolutely hilarious thing here is that your position with regard to violence is exactly like the American Bible-belter position on sex that you find so incomprehensible. They think that if they don't show tits on TV there will be less sex. You think that if you don't show guns on TV there will be less violence.

To deal with anything effectively, you must first recognize it. Just ask any 12-step program member what the first step is.

Besides, why should I want to change anything? Who said that I have to?

I think the problem here is that you and me have different frames of reference. I think I know what your basic assumptions are, but I'd rather not argue with my assumptions of your assumptions. Care to lay out where you are coming from?

So, you defend a position where violence (with or without) guns is an inbuilt part of human nature, just like sex? Create and destroy, quite the same level of "necessity"?
And this has to be so for all times?

I know you are probably in a majority with that frame of thought.

Part of why I personally don't care much for this world in general any more ;-).

On violence

Date: 2007-12-02 06:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jpaganel.livejournal.com
I said no such thing. There is no comparison between violence and sex in my post. I also did not speak to necessity. In short, there is not sufficient information in the post to peg me as part of any group, let alone some majority. You made an assumption. :)

Guns are not all that important in and of themselves. They do not cause violence, they are merely one of a multitude of tools that can be used for it. I severely dislike the term "gun violence" because, if we wanted to delve into such particulars, we would have to speak of knife violence, screwdriver violence and crystal vase violence. That gets silly rather quickly and dilutes the point. Violence is violence.

What I did say is that I'd like to know why it is assumed that I must desire to do something about it. Actually, the question is even broader than that.

This is turning interesting. I'm wondering if I should start off with a nice TLP in my journal...

Eh, well - if you compare framstag's attitude towards violence with that of the bible belt toward sex, I hope you assume at least a tiny sort of comparability between the two subjects....?

And I said "probably part of a majority". Assumption, right. I'm a pessimist, is all ;-).

You made it perfectly clear that you do not desire to change anything, there.
Why some might like you to change your attitude is rather hard to explain, I'm afraid. Seems to take a certain humanitarian (European?) upbringing to even grasp the concept of a cooperative (in opposition to competitive) society... I certainly am not the one to fiddle with your view of the world, so suit yourself :-D.

I don't *do* flamewars, and am slowly getting to terms with the fact that our (central European) take on war and violence (Never Again, and all that) has no relevance in the US, and probably even less elsewhere.
Was a bit of a shock, but then - I'm old. In my time, idealism was still possible without being pitied ;-p.

Nope. None at all. I am comparing framstag and the bible-belters, nothing else. It is entirely possible to have the same attitude towards different things without them being the least bit similar. There is no logical connection there.

You made it perfectly clear that you do not desire to change anything, there.

Nope. I did not. I merely challenged an assumption. I didn't even go as far as playing devil's advocate, since I didn't actually state a position on the subject. I was not trying to task you with changing my worldview, I just wanted to learn a bit more about yours. I like asking questions. So far, I see that you assume a lot.

I wouldn't know about European or US upbringing, as I've had neither.

I'm not sure why you'd mention a flamewar. I thought we were having a rather civil discussion here. Did I miss something?

The realization of the fact that your way is not the only right way is definitely a sign of experience, and experience does not necessarily come with old age. Besides, I don't think you're old in a purely chronological sense, so it's not a good excuse. :)

As ravages of war go, Eastern Europe got the shorter end of that stick, IMO. There is no Central European monopoly on "never again". It has different meaning in different places, though.

I'm with you on this. Americans are idiots. When there is more concern about someone saying the word "fuck" and actual fucking than there is with the incessant barrage of violence, it means that obviously we're a brutish culture embracing brutishness.

I am so tired of it being acceptable to sanitize everything and give idiot parents a pass on their responsibility. It does not take a freakin' village to raise a child...takes responsible parents.

My brother's kids know they would be in deep doodoo if they broke family rules. He has also made certain that his girls are not exposed to smut. He and my sister-in-law can be annoying, but they are good at parenting in that they don't expect others to do their job.
