Maybe I'll get the following done today:

- defrag deliverable Frankensystem
- drag completed deliverable items downstairs for loading into car
- type out a spec sheet for the Frankensystem for future reference
- finish critiqueing stories for writers' group this evening
- go sign up for unemployment
- dump a pile of mp3s to another hard drive and add to sister-in-law's system
- cram all unused parts into antistatic bags and store in box
- vacuum office floor
- sort out horrible pile of paper

I've got two seemingly dead printers. I feel a twinge of guilt at having gotten the deliverable together except for the printer, which for a writer is crucial. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and suggest he go to the flea market or a thrift store and get a used printer. I would strongly counsel against going to CompUSA or such like since they're likely to have only printers with XP drivers that won't work with 98 and from what I can gather, many printers are USB and not parallel anymore. USB won't work for that older thing.

Last night, Corpsman and I watched "The Day After Tomorrow". The special effects were way cool (literally), but the plot was abysmal. The whole think about Dennis Quaid's character running off to save his son seemed so trite. There he was, a scientist who pretty much missed out on vast chunks of his kid's childhood, deciding to abrogate his responsibility to society as one of the few people who had an understanding of the climate problem in order to suddenly become SuperDad. Only a few of the characters were noble enough to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of society. I guess my mindset is much more Vulcan than human in that the needs of the many do outweigh the needs of the few or the one. So he selfishly headed off to rescue the fruit of his loins and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere be damned.

Another thing that irked me about that flick was that all the concern was for Americans (with a little tidbit thrown to the British). "Evacuate Americans to Mexico!" What about the Canadians? What about Northern Europeans? What about the Russians, Chinese, Koreans and Japanese? Zero concern. Hell, if it was supposed to be a global problem, why was the focus on saving the northern states? Another thing, New York City seemed to stand in for all the northern states. Why? It would have been a more powerful movie if the script would have been more expansive.

That's what I liked a lot about the TV movie "SuperVolcano". Several characters in it willingly faced danger and defeat. The side story about the vacillating scientist sending his family to safety was slightly irritating, but it refrained from overall horrible mushiness.

Update: My writer friend is thrilled to have a computer. I gave him my phone number in case he has questions. Maybe I'll get one of the printers working and take it next week. I'm tired and still have to get the trash out tonight for pickup tomorrow. Off to empty the cat box and then sack out to watch the "Daily Show".

Such a strange plot. Shame about the portrayal of us brits. Don't even get me started on the science.
But pretty, even beautiful at times.

There You Have It

You just need a pair of those prettiness goggles when you watch movies like this. Apocalyptic movies always make me anxious and that speaks nothing about their bad plots or bad science. I always get overly involved unless I can find humor in who makes the worst decisions, and how bad their dialog is.

It is a basic "oh look how cool our special effects are . . . plot? what's that???"

It's NOT a movie for when you want something serious (as you found)

We calls those 'make popcorn and giggle movies' - we're actually rather fond of them in general - we like silly movies!

Like Pauly Shore is Dead and White Chicks - hardly high brow stuff.

Sideways - that was up for all kinds of awards?? HATED IT - gack.

On the other hand, we saw LA Confidential this weekend - what a great movie (violent, but WOW!)

Good luck on the computer issues - I still believe in computer faries myself!

Got any printer fairies you could spare?

I'd like to get at least one of these two printers working so that I can hand them off with the Frankensystem I'm delivering tonight. It's not going to happen unless the fairies traipse by in the next half an hour.

Heck, if I lived in Louisiana

I'd ask if I could work with you. Seriously. I did a lot of grunt work when I worked up in Pennsy.

Btw, have you seen Hitchiker's Guide to the Universe? LOL I thought it was great. Looking very much forward to seeing Star Wars. Hope it's as good as I hear, I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

:)
